Shopping Cart Safety

When Jaden was a baby, we always had a problem with her wanting to put her mouth on that metal bar of the shopping cart that is right below the handle...disgusting, I know.  It was something about that cold piece of metal that she craved every single time!  We tried and tried everything we could think of to not let her mouth touch it.  We did sanitize the cart every time just in case she got to it before we did.  It wasn't until she was past that phase that I realized a simple solution to her problem!  You better believe I filed it in the back of my mind for when little Taylor was cart-ready!  Well, Taylor can now sit in the shopping cart and we are prepared!

First, get a pool noodle.

Next, measure and cut to fit the width of a shopping cart.  You can get two covers out of one noodle!

Then, slice one side of the noodle the entire length.  Only cut through to the center.  Don't cut entirely in half.

Finally, slap it on the cart!  You will never have to worry about your babe munching on that tasty piece of metal again!

Because one noodle made two covers, Mike and I each keep one in our car at all tmes so no matter who is driving, we always have one with us.  It works great!

UPDATE: People were concerned that Taylor would bite off a piece of the foam and choke.  I tested this cover by biting it myself and can tell you that it is tough.  The pool noodle I got (and I'm pretty sure most are like this) is made from a plastic-like foam so it doesn't absorb water since it was made to be used in the pool.  My teeth didn't even leave a bite mark.

I'm linking to these parties!

  4. Great Idea! And so much easier to carry in and out of the grocery than those bulky fabric covers.

  8. such a great idea! My kiddos suck on the cart and I never could rationalize packing around one of those shopping cart covers that covers the whole seat! Too much bulk just to keep the nasty stuff out of their mouth! This is perfect!

  9. Very clever! And, considering you can find those noodles at the dollar store, that's a very thrifty idea as well. :) tfs!
