Mom Trumps Law

This morning on the radio, they were talking about a story coming out of Pennsylvania about a mom that was waiting at the bus stop for her child to get off the bus.  When the bus stopped, kids are yelling at her for help saying that her son wasn't waking up and wasn't moving.  From the window, she sees her son slumped over in his seat, unresponsive.  Being a registered nurse, not to mention his mother, she rushes onto the bus to help. The bus driver informs her that it is illegal for parents to go on the school bus.  Now, this woman is facing a $2500 fine and up to a year in jail.  As it turned out, her son was completely fine, just in a deep sleep.  What are you opinions on this?  Personally, I think it is absolutely ridiculous!  If kids were yelling at me that one of my girls wasn't moving and needed help, nurse or not, I am on that bus!  It is my duty as a mother to protect my children.  If I fear for their health or safety, you better believe that the law will take a back seat.  Also, shouldn't the bus driver have been more concerned with the child than keeping the mom who is a nurse off the bus?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't nurses and doctors required by law to help if they come upon someone in need?  What if the bus had been in a crash?  Would that mother still have been arrested if she went onto the bus to pull out the children?  Or, what if her child DID need medical help?  What if he really wasn't breathing and she did help him?  I doubt that she would have been arrested in that case.  What are your thoughts?

I feel that this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. That bus driver should have been attempting to give medical attention of some sort to the child, rather than worry about a mother coming on board to care of what could have been a gravely ill child. What is this world coming to when a mother is being facing criminal charges and jail time for attempting to help her child when it is believed they are ill?

I'm a nurse but even if I wasn't I would have been on that bus to help my child! And yes, nurses and doctors are required to stop and help! What a shame, that bus driver is ridiculous. Glad the kid was ok!

this is ridiculous on so many levels! first, why is it illegal for parents to come on a bus??? second, and i totally agree with you, if a
child, ANY child is in danger, i think it's an adults duty to look out for the little one. even MORE so if that child is yours. shame on this bus driver. NOTHING would stop me from getting to my baby if I needed to get to her.

O. M. G. I would've been on that bus in a hurry. I don't think I would be able to contain myself if the bus driver started getting on me about it. Might've punched him on my way out. LOL Unreal...

I think that law was put into place to protect the bus driver as much as the students. There are a lot of crazy people out there and, unfortunately, some of them are parents. As a public servant, anyone involved in a public school system--including transportation employees--are subjected to harassment. I think it's a horrible idea to have any type of blanket law, but it's my guess that there was something in the history of that area that incited the district/city/state (not sure which level) to initiate it.

I don't know the details of what went down to make the bus driver report her--in the heat of the moment, perhaps a lot of anger was exchanged--but I know any parent would have done the same as the mom did. I am glad her son's okay and I hope that the courts put themselves into her shoes and, at the very least, drop the jail time. That would certainly be in the best interest of the child.

there is no law, rule, or guideline that would ever keep my from rushing to my kiddos aide! how would you ever live with yourself if there WAS something seriously wrong and you did nothing for them. think the outcome would be much different if something was wrong.

I looked up the rule for Fort Wayne Community Schools. According to the Student Parent Handbook (for which I designed!), "Parents are reminded that in the state of Indiana, it is unlawful
(a class D felony) for any unauthorized person, including
parents to board a school bus without the permission of the
school corporation."

I agree that this is for the safety of the kids, but I also agree that there are exceptions to each and every rule. I also agree with the bus driver calling the police if the woman was getting out of control. I would have been out of control if I thought that someone was keeping me from my unresponsive child. BUT, I also agree with you all in that they need to look at the reason she was on the bus and the fact that she didn't cause any harm to any of the individuals. Hot topic, indeed!

I can't believe a parent could be fined for getting on the bus, especially in the case of an emergeny (even though in this case it wasn't) I would want to help any chile in need and would if there was a problem, even if it meant being fined!
