An Apple A Day...

When we moved into our house last summer, we inherited an apple tree. I wasn't very excited about it because growing up, I remember walking down the alley to my best friend's house. There were always those soft, green, apple-like things all over the alley. I don't know if it was the apples or the caged German Shepherd, but that alley smelled awful!  To this day, I pair that smell with those apples (or whatever they were).  So, when we learned of our apple tree, I just knew we'd have that smell in our backyard... yay.

The apple tree became a nuisance.  Mike would have to pick up the fallen apples before he mowed each time.  Although it didn't reek like I had expected, it was still a pain compared to the rest of the trees in our yard.

Dad came over a month or so ago and grabbed a couple of apples off of the tree. He was going to eat them! What?!  I never even considered eating the apples!  I don't know why the thought never crossed my mind. Maybe it was still the stinky apples that I remembered growing up. I know that those (if they even were apples) were not to be eaten.  I was surprised that Dad wanted to eat them.  I told him he could take as many as he wanted... What was I going to do with them??  In the meantime, I continued to buy apples every week at the store.  Yes, I am aware of how ridiculous this sounds.

Last night, I was out back grilling our dinner and I noticed how many apples were on the tree. It amazed me!  Wow! I actually have apples on my apple tree!


I gave the girls a bag and told them to get picking!  We were going to be set for LIFE!



Although small, these apples looked great!

 

I washed and cut one for Taylor and I to try. It was delicious! A little tart, but very good!  I will not be buying apples from the store this weekend, that's for sure.


We have enough to feed an army! Come on over and fill a bag!  I'm excited to eat fresh apples all fall :-)

Shanterest: Pumpkin Muffins


Day 12: Pumpkin Muffins with Crumble Topping

Ready to be really jealous??  I'm taking part in a weekend full of scrapbooking! I went last night, am going back all day today, and then again tomorrow morning!  I can't wait to show-and-tell :o)

During this event, meals are provided.  I signed up for Saturday morning breakfast.  I thought that pumpkin muffins would be a great idea!  I found many recipes on Pinterest, but this one looked super easy. 


I love baking from scratch.  Box mixes are great for some things, but when it comes to muffins, no mixes allowed!  This recipe turned out great!

One problem... As I was measuring out the flour:
Jaden: "Mom.  Mommy."
Mike: "Jaden, she can't talk. She's counting."
Jaden: "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11....."
Me: "JADEN! Stop!"

aaannnnnndddd... the first batch aren't as puffy as the second batch.  Oh well.  I tested them and they are delish!

Pumpkins, Monkeys, and Zebras, OH MY!

A couple of weeks ago, the girls and I met Mom and Dad at Schmucker's Farm to pick out the perfect pumpkins!  J had seen that other people had pumpkins sitting outside and wondered why we didn't have any.

First, the girls each got to pick out a tiny pumpkin to sit in their rooms.
Taylor was a little grumpy, but cute nonetheless!

J and I loved the little white pumpkins!  Seriously, I wanted to buy like 10 or 20 of those cute little things!

Then, they each got to pick out a small pumpkin to paint!
Jaden picked out the perfect pumpkin to paint!

Gramma J helped Taylor find one perfect for her!
Jaden has a new fascination with gourds, so she got to pick out a few to take home.
Jaden picked out some gourds to add to our fall decor at home.

Taylor even found one that she liked!

We also got one big pumpkin to carve into a Jack-O-Lantern!  Before we left, Gramma J and Gramps treated the girls to a little snack :o)
It's amazing how giant Smarties can make a girl smile!

It was a fun time!  Then, as we were getting ready to leave, Mom remembered that she had some hats for me that I had ordered for the girls!  A friend of mine whom I went to high school with made these cute animal hats for them!

I got an ear warmer headband and LOVE it!

I'm almost looking forward to the colder weather so we can wear these!  They are so warm and CUTE!

Project Life: Week 37

I don't know about you guys, but I have a serious case of the Mondays!  No motivation whatsoever.  Hence the reason for a Project Life post that should most definitely be three separate posts. 
I love the concentration on J's face as she works on her homework.

She's getting good at writing A and a!

I have a tradition of getting the girls' handprints on a tile each year on their birthday.  I did it each month for the first year. 


 


On Saturday, Mom and I took the girls to the Johnny Appleseed festival! 
We learned how to make carmel corn... SO good!!

We got to make beaded necklaces!





 

Each of the girls got a leather bracelet with their name stamped into it.

Spooky Sticks

A while ago, I bought three square vases in hope of changing them for each season or holiday.  I got the idea from Karla at It's the Little Things.  She filled hers with candy corn and sticks last Halloween.  I bookmarked that post and actually did it this year!  It is such a cheap, easy decoration.  J loves the "spooky sticks" in the entryway!



All I did was buy 3 bags of candy corn and dump a bag in each vase.

Then, J and I headed outside to find some sticks.  I broke them down and we spray painted them black. 

Finally, we stuck them in the vases for a spooky Halloween decoration!  I think I'm going to leave them up through fall... maybe add a pine cone turkey or two :o)
