I don't know about you guys, but my husband is always asking me, "What's for dinner tonight?" I saw this chalkboard in PB and the $150 price tag and thought, "I can make that!"
I found this old print and actually got it for free!
Don't worry, I Googled the artist and nothing came up for this painting.
It was filthy dirty when I got it home. After cleaning it up really good, I loved the frame color! I was going to spray paint it black but the yellow and orange matched my kitchen/dining room perfectly!
The frame was a little dinged up. I really liked the look of that so I distressed a little more and did a wash with some black acrylic paint.
The black acrylic really brought out all of the imperfections. It looks really weathered. Totally the look I was wanting!
I put a couple of coats of primer right over the painting.
Then I just painted the chalkboard on!
After the chalkboard paint dried, I had to cure it by rubbing chalk over the entire area then wiping it off.
Next, I had to put a picture hanger on the back because for one, it was a horizontal painting and I wanted a vertical chalkboad, plus the wire that was attached to the back to hang the picture from was pretty rusted and nasty.
I tried it out last night...
Perfect! After dinner, I erased it and wrote the entire week's menu.
Total cost: $0!! I had the primer from my countertops and Mom had some leftover chalkboard paint. So put that in your pipe and smoke it, PB! Sorry, that was mean... I still love you :o)
Linking this to a bunch of parties this week... check them all out here! There are some pretty crafty ladies out there!

I love chalkboards!!! Yours is great!
I laughed when I saw that you put the Kilz right over the painting! Too funny and a great chalkboard! Joni
That looks great! I love chalkboards and I really need to do something with my can of chalk board paint!
Great minds think alike! lol love your blog and your chalkbboard. Hope you can stop by my place.
Chocolate chip cookies?
Chocolate chip cookies on the menu?
Obviously, not REAL chocolate chip cookies.
Let's have a little truth in advertising, OK?
Great idea! I had something like this in the back of my mind, but never thought too much about it. Hubby said "why don't you write out a week's menu & put in on the fridge?". I thought, "um...no! chalkboard!". LOL
That's excellent. Great work. I love the idea. I'm running out of wall space in my kitchen! Maybe I can move the fridge to make room for this? :) Just out of curiosity, what happens if you don't "cure" it? I've never used chalkboard paint before....!
I'm not really into the whole chalk-board craze going on right now, but I really really like this one a lot!! Nothing beats a basic chalk board with a nice frame. Perfect for the kitchen.

Good work! It looks great! When you first said you wanted the PB one, I almost said, "IKEA has the same thing for 10 bucks!" but then I realized you don't have IKEA. Doesn't matter anyway, because Free beats everything!!
Great idea. I'll have to keep my eyes open for things to transform. Thanks for sharing:)

Hi there! :) I love that you left the frame pretty much as-is...plus it was less work than repainting. The price was right for this project!
Thanks for sharing the step-by-step...I've seen finished chalkboard projects where people have gone over paintings, but wasn't sure how the surface would look during the process.
I'm stopping by from the kojo designs Friday Fun Favorites party. Hope you'll come by for a visit. :)
My husband and kids are always asking me "What's for dinner" it drives me crazy. I love the idea of the chalkboard. I looks great.
Thanks for sharing.
